Being a student-athlete means that you should be just that--a student first, and an athlete second.
If you've participated and excelled in athletics for a long time, you've probably dreamed of playing--maybe even pro--sports. That's a great goal, although it is statistically very unlike to happen.
If you are interested in playing college sports, you'll want to talk seriously with your current coach about the kind of opportunities that might be available to you at a collegiate level.
According to the NCAA's Guide for the College-bound Student Athlete, you should ask prospective colleges about the following:
- What position you might play
- When the current head coach's contract end
- Walk-on policies
- Student life on campus
- Percentage of student-athletes in your sport who graduate in four years
- Whether the college offers a major that interests you and fits your career goals
- Whether students have to miss class for practice or competition
You'll also want to check out the NCAA's Web site for eligibility requirements for student-athletes.
