Electives

While you may feel like you're being herded into your required high school classes, just remember this magic word: electives.

High school students in Indiana have electives built into their academic plans. In addition to required courses, you may choose additional classes from the arts, computers, careers and other areas.

Ideas when Choosing Electives

Do
  • Prepare a "Four-Year High School Course Plan" and record it in your Indiana Guidance Portfolio. Use and revise this plan to make sure you have the courses you need for the diploma you desire and the electives to help you prepare for the future.
  • Think about your future career plans. Complete a Career-Academic Sequence that will help you explore college majors and careers areas. For help, talk with your school counselor or look over the Indiana Career Pathways
  • Remember your High School Course Plan is flexible. You can make changes in the courses you take as you find out more about yourself and your career interests.
  • Talk to your parents, teachers and school counselor about which courses they recommend for you.
Don't
  • Sign up for an elective class you're unsure of just because your friends have picked it.
  • Choose an elective because it sounds easy and will allow you coast to a good grade. That's a waste of your time.
  • Hesitate to try something new. If you feel there's an artist, actor or writer lurking inside you, use your electives to explore your talents.
